When weather forecasters predict severe storms, one of the biggest concerns is losing power. It doesn’t always happen, but unfortunately, losing electricity is often a reality during hurricane season. To prepare for a power outage, here are a few important steps.

1. Charge Your Devices to Prepare for a Power Outage

Make sure to charge your phone and other electronic devices. You may need them during an extended power outage. To prepare for bad weather, invest in a portable charger or two. These are extremely helpful if your devices run out of battery and you don’t have electricity to charge them.

If you have a laptop or tablet, verify it is fully charged. The laptop or table can provide entertainment, especially for younger family members, when the power is out.

2. Fill the Bathtub with Water

When a storm is on the way, fill the tub with water. While this may seem like an odd step, it can be beneficial during a power outage. If an electric pump powers your water, it will not function without electricity. Filling the bathtub ahead of time provides a reserve of water for flushing the toilet, washing your hands, and other basic needs.

3. Prepare for a Power Outage by Stocking Up on Water

It’s necessary to have water on hand in an emergency. Fill up as many jugs and pitchers as you can with fresh water and store them in a cool, dark place. If you have a water filter, fill jugs and label them. You’ll have a stock of clean drinking water to use while the electrical grid is down. You might also fill containers of water with bleach to use for cleaning during an outage. Label them clearly, so no one drinks your cleaning solution.

When you live with pets, fill their water bowls as well. They will need drinking water during and after the storm.

4. Keep Non-Perishable Food On-Hand

Having a stock of food is a good idea any time of year. However, it’s essential during hurricane season, when power outages are more likely to occur. Stock your pantry with canned goods, dry goods, and other non-perishable food items. You will have food even if the power is out for an extended period.

5. Gather Candles, Matches, and Flashlights

You will need a way to see in the dark when the power is out. Candles, matches, and flashlights are essential for safety during a power outage. Keep at least one flashlight on hand for each family member. Young children feel safer when they have their own light source.

Have a stock of candles and matches or lighters ready for the storm. They will be helpful in illuminating areas of your home if you lose power.

If you have lanterns, purchase oil or kerosene before the storm arrives. You’ll be ready to use them if the electrical grid fails.

6. Fuel the Generator

A generator is a much-appreciated convenience when the electricity is out. If you have a generator, make sure it is in good working order and has enough fuel to last several days.

When you know a storm is on the way, replace the batteries in important devices. Radios, clocks, and smoke detectors will still function if their batteries are good.

These are just a few things you can do to prepare for a power outage. Following these steps, you can help keep your family safe and comfortable if the power goes out.
